What the NYC TLC exam actually involves
The TLC Driver License Exam is 80 multiple-choice questions at a PSI test centre, with a two-hour limit and 70% to pass — 56 correct out of 80. That margin matters: you can miss 24 questions and still pass, so no single subject can fail you on its own if the rest are solid. Questions come from five areas — TLC rules and regulations, safe driving and traffic rules, Vision Zero, customer service, and geography — and the one most people under-prepare is rules and regulations, because it reads like common sense and is really a list of exact figures.
The exam is also offered in several languages, including Spanish and Bengali. If you plan to sit it in one of those, practise in that language from the start: studying in one language and being tested in another adds a translation step under time pressure, and technical terms are exactly where that step goes wrong.
